Cadmium sulfide has been used a phosphor, a glass and pottery colorant and, as a photodetector / photoconductor. Its toxicity has limited it applications, but most recently, highly photoluminescent cadmium sulfide quantum dots have found applications as biological labels for tracking molecular interactions.
