About Beryllium
Beryllium is a light alkaline earth metal with atomic number 4 that generally forms compounds in the +2 oxidation state. Beryllium oxide conducts heat while providing electrical insulation, making it useful in specialized electronic ceramics. Copper beryllium alloys are used in springs and electrical contacts, while thin beryllium windows transmit X rays in scientific instruments. Beryllium dust and many beryllium compounds present serious inhalation hazards that require controlled handling.
