Boron

Atomic No. 5 B Boron

About Boron

Boron is a metalloid with atomic number 5 whose chemistry is dominated by covalent bonding and the +3 oxidation state. Boric oxide is used in borosilicate glass, while boron carbide provides hardness for abrasives and protective armor. Boron is also used to dope silicon semiconductors, and the strong neutron absorption of boron 10 is useful in neutron detection and shielding.
