About Lead
Lead is a dense metal with atomic number 82 that commonly forms compounds in the +2 and +4 oxidation states. Lead and its oxides are used in lead acid batteries, while its density makes the metal useful for radiation shielding. Lead zirconate titanate provides a different function as a piezoelectric ceramic for actuators and transducers, although lead toxicity remains an important material selection consideration.
