About Thallium
Thallium is a metal with atomic number 81 that forms compounds in the +1 and +3 oxidation states. Small amounts of thallium activate scintillators such as sodium iodide, enabling radiation to be detected through light emission. Thallium halides also have specialized infrared optical uses, but their toxicity is a major constraint on handling and processing.
