Oxides are a large class of compounds in which oxygen is combined with another element. In their lowest oxidation state, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, and post-transition metals form ionic oxides, which contain the 2- anion. Metals with a higher oxidation state form oxides with more covalent bonds. The properties of oxides can vary widely depending on the element(s) that the oxygen is bonded with.
